Efficient copper electroplating silicon-based heterojunction solar cell was successfully developed

The 21st International Conference on Photovoltaic Science and Engineering was held in Fukuoka, Japan from November 28 to December 2, 2011. Japan's Kaneka and the Belgian Microelectronics Research Center (IMEC) demonstrated nonsilver-based silicon-based heterojunction solar cells. Based on IMEC's existing copper plating technology, Kaneka successfully developed a highly efficient copper-plated silicon-based heterojunction solar cell by applying this technology. Electroplated copper contacts the transmission grid on a transparent conductive oxide layer, and the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the 6-inch silicon substrate exceeds 21%.

Currently, silver paste screen printing technology is the first choice for implementing the top grid electrode of silicon heterojunction solar cells. There are still difficulties in reducing the screen printing resistance of silver paste and thinning the metal lines, and it is also difficult to achieve the goal of high efficiency and low cost of solar cells. In the non-silver paste solar cell technology demonstrated by Kaneka, electroplated copper replaces silver paste, and thus, the top gate electrode of the world's first copper electroplated silicon heterojunction solar cell was formed. Copper electroplating is an economical and industrially proven treatment. This solution not only overcomes the shortcomings of silver paste screen printing, but also has the advantage of improving conversion efficiency and reducing processing costs.

The results show that in the bilateral cooperation between Kaneka and IMEC (Levenen, Belgium), the conversion rate of silicon-based heterojunction solar cells based on IMEC copper electroplating technology has exceeded 21%. Kaneka's European Photovoltaic Laboratory is located on the IMEC campus in Leuven, Belgium. It provides the most advanced photovoltaic infrastructure and facilitates close interaction between IMEC and Kaneka researchers. Bilateral cooperation between Kaneka and IMEC (Levenen, Belgium) includes the improvement of Kaneka thin-film solar cells and the development of next-generation heterojunction solar cells.
