Global aluminum ranks first in non-ferrous metals

The global amount of aluminum used in non-ferrous metals has relied on research conducted by the former European Aluminum Association, which found that Western countries consume at least 12 kilograms of aluminum per person per year, compared with 35 kilograms in the United States. Aluminum has become the most widely used large non-ferrous metal today, but the price of primary aluminum has fallen by more than 20 years ago compared with the same period of last year. An independent consultant for the mining and metals industry, Brook Hunt, said that there will be a surplus of 1 million tons of aluminum in the global market this year. By 2003, the surplus aluminum will drop to 500,000 tons, and in 2004 it will be reduced to 100,000 tons. The Chinese market will be a bigger factor affecting global aluminum prices in the coming years. In 2002, China’s aluminum consumption and production accounted for 16% of the world's total. It is expected that in the next three years, China's aluminum production will account for about 21% of the global market, exceeding the growth of domestic demand, and its demand will account for 19% of the global market. China will become a big net exporter in the next few years. (Shanghai Metal Network)
