The mercury vapor pressure during ignition is 2 to 5 atmospheres, and the inner tube is made of quartz glass. The ultraviolet spectrum of the high-pressure mercury lamp is broadened and blue-green, which can be used for photochemical reactions, lithography machines, ultraviolet detection and fluorescence analysis. In order to make the high-pressure mercury lamp use in illumination, it is often improved in the following two ways: 1 outside the quartz inner tube, plus a glass shell, the inner wall is coated with a higher temperature resistant phosphor, and the ultraviolet radiation is converted. The red visible light makes the radiation spectrum of the high-pressure fluorescent mercury lamp close to warm white and has high luminous efficiency. 2 The inner wall of the glass casing is not coated with phosphor, and a tungsten wire is connected in series between the casing and the quartz lamp tube, which acts as both a ballast and a red light that is lacking in the high-pressure mercury lamp to improve the color of the light. This type of high-pressure incandescent mercury lamp is easy to use and can be directly connected to a 220 volt AC power source. The luminous efficiency is lower than that of a high-pressure fluorescent mercury lamp, but higher than that of an incandescent lamp.

After being energized, the discharge tube generates strong visible light and ultraviolet rays, and the ultraviolet rays are irradiated on the fluorescent bulb to emit a large amount of visible light. The light emitted by the high-pressure mercury lamp does not contain red, and the object it emits is blue, so it is only suitable for lighting in squares and streets.
