In places where there is a lack of fresh water in the world (such as salt or water sources), people can only use potable water or solar heating to obtain drinking water. But a study at the University of Maryland promises to bring them simpler, more affordable water treatment solutions. The key to this research is to use burned wood as material. Under sunlight, untreated water vapor can pass through the surface material and can be collected as pure water, leaving salt and contaminants on the other side.

In terms of applied materials, scientists have recently achieved certain success in graphite and copper. But a team of researchers led by Professor Hu Yanbing of the University of Maryland used a charred, blackened wood to achieve a similar effect (absorbing the sun's light and heat from the upper surface).
Porous wood, such as poplar and pine, is more effective. Through capillary action, water can be drawn from the lower layer to the surface. Once it is boiling under sunlight, it can extract more moisture.

In laboratory tests, the researchers used a piece of palm wood. Professor Hu said that the technology can be easily extended to water treatment plants and create a very effective filtration device.
Recently, studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (RIT) have also proved this point. Details of this study have been published in the recently published "Joule" journal.
