Recently, the team of Wang Feng, a researcher in the Bioenergy Chemicals Research Group of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, used photocatalytic methods to achieve the cracking of biomass polyols to produce methanol and syngas under mild conditions, providing new ideas for biomass conversion and utilization.
Methanol and synthesis gas are bulk chemical raw materials in the petrochemical and coal chemical industries, and can be used to synthesize bulk chemicals such as olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons. At the same time, methanol is also a clean energy. Biomass methanol is considered to be the fourth generation of "liquid sunlight" technology. The biomass resources available in China are as high as 6.7 billion tons per year, and the global annual output reaches 170 billion tons, with abundant reserves. The development of biomass for methanol and synthesis gas is of great significance. At present, methanol can be prepared through the re-funding process of biomass-based synthesis gas. Biomass can be prepared by pyrolysis of high temperature (700 to 1000 ° C), with high energy consumption and harsh reaction conditions.
The team developed a method for preparing methanol and syngas from photocatalytic biomass at room temperature. Under the condition of ultraviolet light excitation, using copper supported on titanium dioxide nanorods as a photocatalyst, C2-C6 polyols and carbohydrate molecules generate methanol and syngas at room temperature. The gas-phase products are mainly CO and CO2. Through the adjustment of the catalyst's energy level structure, surface defects and solvent system, the ratio of CO / CO2 can be adjusted, and the CO selectivity can reach 90%.
