High-density hybrid power capacitors: the new direction of the energy competition

At the Hannover Messe in Germany in 2018, Eric Verhulst, an electronics engineer from Belgium, was looking for battery solutions for the electric car startup he runs. He accidentally discovered the products displayed by Shenzhen Tumen New Energy Co., Ltd. from China, and he was very satisfied.

At that time, the Tumen team issued a statement stating that the company was manufacturing powerful supercapacitors with the energy density of lithium batteries. In an interview with foreign media NewAtlas, Verhulst said: "Of course this is an incredible statement. For example, the capacitor is 20 times stronger than the best Maxwell at the time. So I decided to go to Shenzhen in person and watched their Tested, and I did some tests myself. I can confirm this is true. So at the end of 2018, we reached a cooperation to become their exclusive partner. "

Verhulst said that he and his team brought these "power capacitors" back to the laboratory, and the measured performance was even better than the specifications. In the experimental environment, they conducted rigorous environmental tests, charging and discharging rate in a high-temperature environment of 50 degrees Celsius, but none of them failed.

The team tested them for 30 to 50,000 life cycles without losing a lot of capacity. The team tested it at temperatures as low as -40ºC (-40ºF) and as high as 80ºC (176ºF), and it worked. After being fully charged for a few months, the battery remained at about 100% when tested again.

And their energy density is extraordinary. The highest density battery reaches 200-260Wh / kg, which is the same as today's leading commercial lithium battery, but the charge and discharge rate is higher and there is no danger of explosion.

So how does it work? The power capacitor adopts a relatively special design, which is between the conventional super capacitor and the lithium battery. The capacitor separates the charge statically, just like rubbing a balloon on a jumper. This is why they are so good at fast charging and discharging. Batteries use chemical reactions to store and release charge, which makes them much slower, but gives them a higher energy density.

Verhulst said that one end of Tumen's power capacitor is an "activated carbon" electrode made of a graphene variant, and the other end is based on a lithium compound. There are currently two variants, one prioritizing energy density and the other providing maximum power.

High-density batteries currently provide 200-260Wh / kg of power, and rated power density is about 300-500W / kg. The power of high-power batteries is 80-100Wh / kg, and the power density is about 1,500W / kg, up to 5,000W / kg.
