Most plastic-wrapped goods, such as tools, clothes, and non-electronics, are resistant to certain vapors. However, electronic devices, especially those that need to be stored for a long period of time, will be damaged when water vapor builds up to a certain extent. After trying a variety of materials, the researchers discovered graphene. The new material consists of a single layer of carbon atoms in which the carbon atoms are tightly bound together in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice. The research team used a unique process to combine monolayer graphene with a plastic polymer film. The methods they use are easy to accomplish and can be extended to large-scale production. The addition of graphene to the plastic significantly enhances the water resistance, achieving a moisture content control of 0.000030 g/m2 per day.
Next tests using organic photovoltaic equipment, hybrid graphene plastic packaging extended the equipment's shelf life. Based on accelerated weathering data, the researchers believe that those products wrapped with mixed graphene plastic have the potential to be preserved for 1 year, which is much better than the results obtained with conventional plastics that are less than 30 minutes.
