In order to enhance the effectiveness of fire-retardant additives while reducing their use in polymers, many European countries recently launched a joint program called Phoenix. The plan aims to use nanotechnology to develop new flame retardant additives that will replace traditional halogen-free flame retardants.
The Phoenix cooperation plan will be completed under the leadership of the Spanish Plastics Material Research Association and will be coordinated by 15 companies and research institutes in eight European countries. The person in charge of the cooperation project stated that although the traditional halogen-free flame retardants produce gases with low smoke and low toxicity when they are decomposed by heat, their flame-retardant effects are not very satisfactory, and the polymer must have good flame-retardant effects. Need to add a lot of halogen-free flame retardant additives. The excessively high content of the halogen-free flame retardant additive is bound to have a negative effect on the physical properties of the polymer. Therefore, the major goal of the Phoenix project is to rely on nanotechnology to reduce the use of polymer fire retardant additives to 15% on the basis of improved utility.
It is reported that the new flame retardant additive will fully use nano-particles, or combine it with halogen-free materials. Nanoparticles are mainly extracted from graphene carbon-based materials and modified lignin. The researchers said that compared with traditional halogen-free flame retardants, the new flame retardants not only use less, have higher utility, but are safer to use and less polluting the environment.
Common flame retardants are mainly divided into halogen flame retardants and halogen-free flame retardants. Halogen flame retardants are the earliest type of flame retardants used, but due to the release of toxic gases when decomposed, they are very limited in use.
