The Chinese government has three principles for agricultural transgenic technology
Asked about the safety of genetically modified foods, Chen Xiwen said that in the past 20 years, the Chinese government has had three major principles for agricultural GM technology: First, GM technology is the most advanced highland in the contemporary life sciences. China, as a big country in agriculture, cannot be without a place in this field.
Secondly, any genetically modified agricultural product that goes into commercial production and enters the market must undergo rigorous scientific testing. Only by ensuring safety can it be listed.
Third, fully guarantee consumers' right to know and the right to choose. China's stipulation that the listing of any genetically-modified agricultural products on the market or the use of genetically-modified agricultural products as raw materials for processing must be labeled as containing genetically modified agricultural products.
Chen Xiwen pointed out that the No. 1 document of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China this year puts forward “strengthening the R&D and supervision of agricultural GM technology. It is prudently promoted on the basis of ensuring safety.†The term “supervision†is very targeted. At present, there are indeed local and individual areas where some of the seeds of genetically modified agricultural products that have not been approved by the state have flown onto the market and flowed to farmland. The government must therefore exercise strict supervision.
