Hefei Research Institute finds enzyme-like catalytic activity of nickel deuteride nanomaterials

Magnetic hysteresis loops of magnetic spiny nickel deuteride and UV-absorption spectra under different detections

Recently, the research team led by Huang Xingji, a researcher of the Institute of Intelligent Machinery of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Hefei Institute of Physical Science and the chief scientist of the “973” project, Liu Jinhuai, discovered the catalytic activity of deuterated nickel nanomaterials and was successfully applied to biological detection.

Enzymes are a type of biocatalyst. Thousands of enzymes are contained in living organisms. They control many catalytic processes such as metabolism, nutrition, and energy conversion of organisms. The reactions closely related to life processes are mostly enzyme-catalyzed reactions. However, conventional biological enzyme storage conditions are harsh, and improper handling can easily cause enzyme inactivation.

The Institute’s research team has conducted research to find nano-functional materials with enzyme-like activity. In recent years, studies on the properties and applications of magnetic metal tellurides such as iron, cobalt, and nickel have received increasing attention. However, people generally focus on the properties of their thin-film materials and their research on magnetic detectors, and the application of their nanocrystal properties and their enzyme-like activity in biological detection is less involved.

Hefei Institute of Intelligent Institute team researchers prepared a new type of magnetic spine-like deuteride nickel nanowires, and applied it to the experimental study of bio-glucose. Experiments have shown that this new type of material has glucoside-like catalytic activity, which enables rapid detection of glucose, while enabling rapid recovery and the realization of environmentally-friendly biological detection. The research results were published in Chemical Communications, published by the Royal Society of Chemicals (Chemical Communications, 2014, 50, 13589-13591).

The research work has been supported by the National Major Scientific Research Plan Project, the 100-person Plan Project for the Introduction of Overseas Outstanding Talents by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hefei Material Science and Technology Center Project.
