A simple breath to the note can tell whether it is authentic or not. Researchers at Nanjing Southeast University have developed a photonic crystal ink that produces a unique pattern of color change on the surface that responds to moisture and creates reversible color changes. The new anti-counterfeiting technology is difficult to imitate by counterfeiters.
The paper was published in the journal ACS Nano of the American Chemical Society. A species of calf called Tmesisternus isabellae can change from golden to red according to the humidity in the environment, and the new ink mimics this ability to change color.
