According to a report from the Lianhe Zaobao, a study at the University of Eastern Finland shows that omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The University of Eastern Finland, whose study was chaired by Associate Professor Vertanen, involved 2212 Finnish men between the ages of 42 and 60 who had no history of type 2 diabetes. The study took 20 years.
After the study started, the researchers regularly measured serum omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and fasting and postprandial 2-hour blood glucose levels, and tracked their use of diabetes medications.
The results of the study showed that the highest proportion of people with serum omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids was 33% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than the lowest percentage of the population.
Vertanen believes that eating at least twice a week of fish rich in long chain omega-3s, such as salmon, rainbow trout and white mullet, will help prevent type 2 diabetes. He also suggests that people control weight and increase exercise to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
