According to the US media leftlanenews, the University of California is currently achieving a new breakthrough in the field of batteries, which can effectively reduce the volume and cost of lithium-ion batteries. The researchers said that the research results also help to shorten the battery charge time. The U.S. Department of Energy will provide $4 million in incentives to support this project.
Two researchers at the University of California, Professor Miroslav Krstic and postdoctoral researcher Scott Moura, said that the new algorithm they developed helped to uncover the secret of the "complex world" of lithium-ion batteries.
Although lithium-ion batteries are widely used, their reactions in specific environments are still unknown. Therefore, when designing lithium-ion batteries, scientists are often prone to overcorrection, making them both larger and more complex than they actually need.
The new algorithm reduces this waste and it is possible to design smaller batteries, each with a cost reduction of 25%.
Krstic pointed out, "If we can better understand or infer the internal workings of lithium-ion batteries, we can better use them to the fullest, which will eliminate unnecessary size and design waste, which will reduce costs and ease weight."
In the next three years, the University of California will cooperate with supplier Bosch and American battery maker Cobasys to test the algorithm.
