A Singaporean company has developed a mobile desalination system that is more likely to provide clean water to the disaster area. Using the container as the shell of this system, Memsys created a solar desalination system specifically designed for disaster relief.

The system uses Solar Power Membrane Distillation technology to convert salt water to potable water, using only solar energy. The seawater desalination unit is fully mobile and does not require any external parts and is suitable for loading into a 20-foot shipping container. Its power supply uses both solar thermal energy and solar photovoltaics and rarely requires maintenance. Unlike existing seawater desalination technology, it does not require chemical batteries, diesel generators, or any other external power source. According to different sunshine levels, on average, it is estimated that 1,000 liters (or 265 gallons) of drinking water can be produced per day.

This particular process combines thermal distillation and membrane distillation, which are the most common processes used in seawater desalination systems. The water is boiled in a small vacuum vessel, also at a lower temperature, 50-80 degrees Celsius (or 122-176 degrees Fahrenheit), and steam passes through several membrane distillation stages, both at low and low pressure. The energy can be recovered, and after each step, the next step can be driven, which becomes a more effective system than the prior art.
