The reporter recently learned from the State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resources and Water Environment that Prof. Li Xin's group of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of our university has conducted research on dye-sensitized solar cells in cooperation with Prof. Leon Spisia of Monash University in Australia. The work has made important progress recently. The latest research results “Regulation of the surface modification of octadecyltrichlorosilane based on the electronic composite of water-based dye-sensitized solar cells†was recently published in the internationally renowned journal “German Applied Chemistry†(Angew.Chem.Int). .Ed.2014, 53,6933-6937.). The first author of the thesis is Dong Cunku, a Sino-Australian co-cultivator and doctoral candidate, under the guidance of Prof. Li Xin and Professor Leon Spicia. The research was funded by independent projects of the State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resources and Water Environment and a special research fund for doctoral disciplines in higher education.
Dye-sensitized solar cells (abbreviated as DSSCs in English) are called "next generation" solar cells and have broad application prospects. Traditional dye-sensitized solar cells use organic solvents, which have the disadvantages of low boiling point, high volatility, and easy combustion, which cause difficulties in the packaging of batteries. The aqueous electrolytes have very small saturated vapor pressures. Volatile, high boiling point, wider electrochemical window and other advantages. In this study, the sensitized titanium dioxide (TiO2) photoanode exposed surface was modified by passivation of octadecyltrichlorosilane through experimental and molecular dynamics simulations. The study found that the alkyl silane modification can greatly inhibit the interfacial electron recombination to a great extent, thereby increasing the open circuit voltage and the short-circuit photocurrent density. Finally, the efficiency of the aqueous electrolyte dye-sensitized solar cell reaches a record high of 5.74%.
